Today I wanted to talk about how grocery stores can reduce germs in the digital world. Believe it or not, we’ve got a pandemic going on. Grocery stores have changed quite a bit. I’ve seen it go from just a normal day to standing six feet apart, Plexiglas barriers, cellophane over the keypads of the credit card machine. That’s what I want to talk about because that’s the part I think will improve here in terms of preventing germs.

Best Intentions

They put the cellophane over the top of the numbers, but the problem there is that while it protects the device, it doesn’t protect the people that have to touch the credit card machine. What we need to do, as a nation, as a world, probably, is get to a point where we don’t have to touch a device to pay for something unless it’s cash, of course.

Room for Improvement

So, I started wondering why we didn’t make it, so you didn’t have to touch the machine. Today, you give them your number for your membership, and then they punch that in themselves. But then there’s the process of saying no thanks to all these sales-type things they want. “Would you like to donate to something?” and I have to hit no thanks. Which means I have to touch the device at least once. Whenever possible, I use Apple Pay on my phone, so I don’t have to touch any devices but my own.

The Future is Contactless

Now think about that for a second. If you could do everything on your phone, you wouldn’t have to touch somebody else’s device and then spread germs. The thought here is, how can grocery stores figure out a way that actually promotes people using Apple Pay. Maybe give a discount, a membership discount for those people that use Apple Pay.

I think that’s going to be an important piece in the grocery store world. Of course, we know we all have to touch the products already, but everybody’s running through that line, and they have to touch that same machine. So how do we get to a place where we don’t have to touch a machine? We pay for it over our phones. That’s going to be the future of the grocery store in my mind.
